Porous Adobe Integrates Courtyards and Perforated Facades

Situated in the expanding area of Belgaum, the Porous Adobe residence is designed on a compact, narrow plot measuring 6 meters in width and 15 meters in depth. The project, by architect Rahul Pudale, addresses the challenges of a south-facing orientation and limited natural light by incorporating strategically placed courtyards. These courts not only serve as light wells, enhancing the interior’s brightness, but also promote cross-ventilation, improving the building’s environmental performance.

The building’s terracotta perforated facade is a key feature, providing both thermal regulation and a distinctive aesthetic. The perforations control light and airflow, contributing to the building’s passive cooling strategy. The use of magenta accents against grey tones adds visual depth, unifying the living spaces and enhancing the overall design.

Rahul Pudale Designs a Sustainable Urban residence in Belgaum

Upon entering the residence, visitors are greeted by a double-height courtyard. This space is illuminated by natural light filtering through a suspended metal grill adorned with green creepers. The sleek metal staircase, central to the design, divides the double-height dining area and serves as a focal point of the interior, creating a sense of movement and connectivity.

Despite the constraints of the plot, the residence efficiently accommodates all functional needs, ensuring comfort without compromising on design quality. Architect Rahul Pudale’s approach exemplifies a thoughtful response to site-specific challenges, seamlessly integrating nature and architecture.
