echasses eco-lodges by patrick arotcharen architecte fit within a delicate lake ecosystem

situated on a reforested nature reserve in saubion, france, french studio patrick arotcharen architecte projected a series of hotel units titled les echasses eco-lodges. the site contains an existing lake whose shoreline was emphasized with man-made dunes that would serve as the foundation for the hotel, surrounded by a natural perimeter of slender pine trees. within this setting, a series of private timber structures at water’s edge make up the lodges that enjoy a strong relationship to the landscape.

in order to preserve the hosting ecosystem, each unit is placed on pylons and elevated off the water’s surface to minimize their physical impact and bring guests as close as possible to the wetland landscape. the exterior wooden wall folds into a gentle butterfly roof that collects and direct rainwater drainage back into the lake and provides shading on the other extreme of the home where full-height windows open into the bedroom area. while each structure is in close proximity the design of the outer envelope ensures privacy for each guest, oriented in the same direction towards the lake creating a sense of isolation.
