a ‘permanently impermanent’ structure by andblack studio

Darwin Bucky takes shape as conical parametric metal tent, serving as a multi-functional events space in Ahmedabad, India. Redefining the practice of architecture, andblack studio proposes a ‘permanently impermanent’ architecture composed of prefabricated wood, steel and aluminum components that can be easily assembled and disassembled, and transported to the next site. The architects use an adaptive architectural system conceived and realized through detailed computational design techniques, demonstrating a harmonious balance between materiality and technological advancements. The system formulates the dynamic triangulated steel panel facade and enables customization for the dome’s diameter, height and form, creating an optimal space to host a variety of events within the black box theatre space.

folded metal sheets compose a large conical tent

With an aesthetic guided by its structural performance, Darwin Bucky’s large dome shape encapsulates a space with only half the material required by conventional structures, and with comparable durability and cost. The design team at andblack studio creates a spacious column-free volume spanning 520 cubed meters, achieved through a unique shell structure assembled using 1mm thick folded metal sheets. The tectonics allow for an open floor plan of 116 square meters and a dynamic silhouette which breaks the monotony of the spatial experience and surrounding landscape. Bolted together, the insulated sheets reveal a dynamic triangulated façade and produce ideal acoustic qualities for a functional black box theatre, while their ridges provide load distribution, electrical conduits, ambient lighting and unique joinery for waterproofing.

andblack studio presents the parametric metal tent as a prefabricated kit of lightweight insulated modular panels that can be dry assembled on site and dismantled in a matter of days to be flat packed for efficient storage and transportation. As such, it eliminates the need for a platform plinth and heavy equipment for transportation and construction and excavation.

a customizable parametric system

Within, the enclosure is able to host a several diverse events. Supporting multi-functional requirements, a variety of services have been integrated to develop a unique structure adaptive to any climactic condition, including in-built lighting and air-conditioning systems, an audio-visual set-up, and an exhibition framework. Striking a balance between materiality and technological advancements in the field of design, Darwin Bucky also engages a computational model that allows for customization, each factor coded as independent variables. The parametric system’s adaptability enables the development of multiple iterations by adjusting the size from 12m to 18m, and selecting its form as either a single unit or multiple interconnected units. Further, a variety of configurations of display, stage and audience interactions can also be generated, giving audiences a distinct experience with every visit.

‘The project becomes a positive activity generator where the community can come together, interact and revive the connection lost during the pandemic.’ writes lead architect Jwalant Mahadevwala of andblack studio. ‘Although a diverse team of computational designers, digital fabricators and local craftsmen collaborated on the project, it became truly secular when ‘Gond’ (traditional painting technique from a remote village of India) artists painted the outer surface with a mythological character as a commentary on today’s society.’ he continues.
