‘ischia market’ is a project by paolo venturella that aspires to rejuvenate a deserted public warehouse through an organization of spaces enclosed by an energy efficient roof. with most of the existing structure in tact, the architect has reinforced its brick walls, built a horizontal slab to create the upper level, and added photovoltaics that characterize the overall volume. in turn, power is provided for all of the inhabitants either on the interior where personal computers, cellphones, and other electronics can be charged, or the exterior where cars can be energized. parametrically, the design implements the panels to create a parametric gradient along the façade that fits the needs of programs below, guaranteeing a sufficient amount of light and maintaining temperatures within the thermal comfort zone. the market is intended to host the production and selling of local artisans whose businesses can gain more exposure by supplying goods to tourists and locals. thus, the work is conceived as an ‘open-covered’ plaza that is open 24 hours a day and accessible during all periods of the year.
