PALMA renovates and extends 'mirlo', a waterfront property on mexico's pacific coast

in sayulita, a village on mexico’s pacific coast, PALMA has the completed the renovation and extension of a waterfront residential property. titled ‘mirlo’, the project involved removing part of the original structure’s roof to create an interior patio that now serves as an entrance hall. when removing this section of the canopy, it was decided to preserve the roof’s original wooden structure as visible evidence of the new intervention.

PALMA explains that the second part of the project involved the addition of a new building that matches the scale of the previously existing structure. accommodating the home’s shared living spaces — the kitchen, dining, and lounge areas — the new volume has a large panoramic window that provides constant and sweeping views of the beach and the pacific ocean beyond. referencing palapas, the open-sided structures commonly found in mexico’s coastal areas, the thatched roof of the building is made from dried palm leaves.

in addition, the home’s existing bedrooms and bathrooms have been reconfigured to take advantage of the available space. vegetation is found throughout the house, with an elevated planter housing a variety of hanging plants that fall downwards towards a stone fountain within the central patio. greenery is also found in the patios of the bedrooms, where plants have been used to ensure privacy. see other projects by PALMA on designboom here, including an ephemeral paper installation in mexico city.
