after eight years of various design proposals and rigorous testing procedures, construction nearing completion at ‘one57’, a tower located at the heart of manhattan. working alongside developers extell, christian de portzamparc‘s design is generated from the area’s specific set of planning regulations, maximizing the constraints of the irregular L-shaped plot to establish the highest residential building in new york.

the 300 meter tall structure is a composition of contrasting, yet unified geometric shapes, housing a range of living accommodation, including the new park hyatt hotel. the façade’s cascading glazed strips become curved forms as they peel away from the structure; sheltering external terraces, and animating the building’s elevations. the 75-storey project utilizes two different types of glass, offering a distinct visual contrast. the pinnacle of the tower tapers to form an identifiable silhouette on the new york skyline, fully embodying the scheme’s strong sense of vertical movement.
