in 2014, international firm OMA won the commission to design the axel springer publishing building in berlin. the german media company will celebrate its 50th anniversary with the launch of its new building, which will be located opposite its existing headquarters on the site of the former linden park. the dynamic new building will act both as a symbol and a tool, highlighting the transition from print to digital media.

led by OMA architects rem koolhaas, chris van duijn, and katrin betschinger, the building is bisected by a diagonal atrium that opens up to the existing springer buildings. a series of terraced floors together form a ‘valley’ which creates an informal stage at the center — a place to broadcast ideas to other parts of the company. the particular organization forms a ‘digital valley’, where each floor composes of a sheltered and traditional work environment, which is then uncovered on the terraces. halfway through the scheme, the valley is mirrored to generate a three dimensional canopy.

furthermore, the public can experience the building on three levels — ground floor lobby, meeting bridge, and roof-top bar. the meeting bridge is a viewing platform from which the visitors can view the daily happenings and movement of the company. see our previous coverage of the development, including OMA’s winning proposal, here
