the recently completed observation tower in lommel, ateliereen, stands at a height of 30 meters and conceived by the dutch-based studio ateliereen architecten in collaboration with mamu architects. a popular destination for walks and relaxation, the tower is situated in a scenic nature reserve next to a lake– distinctive of its sand dunes and pine trees. the triangular frame is structurally efficient, composed mainly of steel, the inner staircase, platform and roof is cladded with timber and elegantly finished off with rope which drapes around the entire tower. with over three and a half kilometers used, the rope highlights a playful tone that draws influence to the wavy lines apparent in the neighboring sand dunes, in addition, as visitors climb the staircase, glimpses of the scenery is framed and interesting shadows are cast.

constructed of three platforms extending the full height, the lowest platform has a ramp allowing access towards the water and from there, visitors begin their journey up through the tower’s core whilst stopping at the middle and furthest platforms to rest, breathe and take in the unencumbered views of the peaceful landscape.
