Objekt Architecten Revives Rural Home with Modern Interior

Objekt Architecten has transformed a detached house in rural Wichelen, Belgium, giving it a refreshed yet contemporary interior while preserving its classic exterior. The renovation restored the original crow-stepped gable, previously covered due to moisture damage, while the rest of the exterior remained untouched except for new contrasting window openings at the rear. A large, double-height window was added to enhance the connection with the garden and surrounding meadows, setting it apart from the original neo-style elements through modern detailing and proportions.

Double-Height Space and Mezzanine Revamp Lamat’s Interior

The interior saw the most significant transformation. The ceiling in the living space was removed, creating an open, double-height area extending below the ridge of the house. A mezzanine was introduced, hovering above the space like a concrete disc cast on-site. This new floor was carefully designed with a focus on the supporting structure and fastening methods, ensuring it integrates seamlessly into the home’s open layout.

To define the different zones within the open-plan space, the architects used varied materials. The kitchen and living room are visually separated by a large planter filled with tropical plants, while green Topcer tiles cover the kitchen floor and continue onto the island and planter. In contrast, parquet flooring defines the living area. Through meticulous detailing, new materials and structural elements have been harmonized into the overall design, creating a seamless and functional interior.
