objekt architecten’s racy red extension

objekt architecten has added a scarlet colored extension to a two-story house in lebbeke, belgium. the brief was to transform an existing two-car garage into a place to enjoy the garden with enough room for one covered parking space, which also serves as storage for bicycles and gardening tools. the architects responded with a 60 sqm volume clad in profiled aluminum cladding in a swedish red – faluröd – color that contrasts with the grey cement wall of the existing dwelling.

the floor plan of the new volume is split diagonally down the middle, with the garage space on one side and the garden room on the other. the garden room projects out towards the green lawn, generating a semi sheltered patio. two large windows on this side provide views out across the garden and bring natural light inside.

meanwhile, the street elevation features a big window positioned on the upper level and a perforated screen of aluminum cladding covering the window at ground level. this allows contact with what is happening on the street without compromising on privacy. the garage door is covered in the same material as the façade, making it almost invisible to passersby. the volume is complete with a sloping green roof, which visually connects to the garden below.

warm wooden interiors

the interior of the garden room is characterized by floor to ceiling timber surfaces. objekt architecten selected this unified finish to accentuate the spaciousness of the room. a sliding door with the same wooden finish connects to the main house while the abundance of natural light creates a soft glow.

‘the result of this conversion is a beautiful ‘hidden’ garden room where the residents can retreat to enjoy the garden or to read’, say the architects. ‘we were inspired by the famous cellar room in villa livia, where livia drusilla could enjoy wonderful frescoes of nature scenes, hidden from the rest of the house. as nothing can match the real beauty of nature, this design was given a real connection with nature, the sun and daily life through the many large window openings.’
