set amid the impressive landscape of tirol, austria, noa* network of architecture has designed a new wellness area for mohr life resort as a contemporary interpretation of the traditional spa typology. inspired by the stunning surrounding nature, the recent intervention intends to form a direct dialogue with the environment’s morphology, culture and history.

constructed on a gentle slope just below the existing hotel, the new wellness area commands 600 m2 and boasts dramatic views out over the ehrwalder becken valley and the imposing zugspitze mountain. the program on the ground floor comprises a private lounge; a lobby and bar for refreshments; a spa and scenic sauna, as well as changing booths and showers. on the upper level, guests can enjoy 10 symmetrical ‘chill-out stages’, and outside, an outdoor area extends into the landscape. featuring a large swimming pool and six ‘island boxes’ overlooking the water, this space provides the perfect place for total relaxation and immersion in nature.

‘the majestic and powerful presence of the mountain itself was our test bench. the zugspitze generally – and its beauty, strength, and formal complexity specifically – was our inspiration and the project’s protagonist. the new wellness area is conceived as a theatre’s stalls, an ideal location to admire that extraordinary masterpiece. guests are cocooned in a relaxing environment which harmonizes with the environment. our challenge is to create structures which expand and intensify the perception of spaces, thus creating restorative areas which stir new emotions in visitors,’ explains architect christian rottensteiner, partner at noa*.

the structure of the building is composed of simple concrete and glass cubes that step into the contours of the land. by using a generous amount of glazing, the design brings an element of reflection as the window panels mirror the enveloping mountain landscape. this transparency also results in an architectural expression that visually connects the indoor environment with the great outdoors.
