in vietnam, NISHIZAWAARCHITECTS has completed its own architecture studio beneath a six-storey house in ho chi minh city. clearly separated from the remainder of the residence, the practice was allowed to utilize and refurbish an area of the property that was originally intended for use as a parking garage. the scheme is intended to provide functional internal space that is simultaneously connected to the natural environment.

NISHIZAWAARCHITECTS’ office is entered via a stairway at one end of the design, which leads into the main working environment. ample greenery is positioned at each end of the plan, with a skylight used to illuminate the sunken space. a small fishpond is also included. the open-ended nature of the scheme ensures cross ventilation, while the water feature casts shimmering patterns of light onto the studio’s ceiling.

the design team sought not to disturb the existing architecture, and chose minimal furnishings for the column-free interior. at the center of the room, a 5 meter-long table is supported by six steel legs, topped with a carbon black skin. invisible book shelves are presented in a similar fashion, while in contrast, coarse-textured wooden floor panels provide a rustic warmth. brick walls have been painted white, reflecting available daylight within the narrow space.
