nintendo museum is opening this october in kyoto

A Nintendo Museum is opening in Kyoto on October 2, 2024. Die-hard fans can discover and experience the history of the Japanese video game company’s entertainment landscape through a series of side-by-side exhibits on the many products it has released over the years. Complementing the main shows are a café inside the museum and a shop carrying official merchandise themed after Nintendo‘s game worlds and characters. The shop also carries items available only in-store. Ticket holders can enjoy both spaces.

hosting eight interactive play experiences

On the first floor of Exhibition Building 1, the Nintendo Museum welcomes visitors to engage in eight unique play experiences enhanced with modern technology. Similar to online quests, players are each granted ten digital coins required to participate in these interactive exhibits. Some of the interactive games include Shigureden, which invites users to explore Hyakunin Isshu poems using a dedicated smart device and a giant screen projected on the floor. The project screen contains several cards inscribed with the second half of each poem. Points are awarded based on how fast users can spot the missing halves and collect the cards. Up to 20 people can play simultaneously.

The Nintendo Museum also hosts the Zapper & Scope, a shooting game that takes users to the world of Mario. Each participant gets to pick between the Zapper, which fires rapidly, and the Super Scope, which is easy to aim. Once selected, players begin shooting at ‘enemies’ like Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Chain Chomps. Up to 13 people can play simultaneously.

Moreover, Game & Watch, a once pocket-sized quest, has been remade on a massive screen. Here, players use their shadow projected onto the display to engage with the game. Users can choose between Ball (the first Game & Watch version released) and Manhole. For the more traditional enthusiasts, the museum included a Nintendo Classics section, focused on games released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Nintendo 64 Hardware. A two-player game with controllers reminiscent of those from childhood.

Finally, on the second floor of Exhibition Building 1, visitors can experience Nintendo products that have been released to date. ‘The exhibits showcased here are shared with little explanation. As you observe the items on display, we encourage you to form your unique thoughts—and to share them with others! You don’t need any special knowledge or familiarity with video games to make the most of your visit,’ writes the Nintendo Museum. For more information on the games and visiting hours, you can check out the museum’s website.
