fg studio’s shanghai soup bun elevates the breakfast tradition

As modern dining establishments such as tea rooms, cafés, and bars continue to evolve with unique spatial concepts, traditional dim-sum shops — especially those specializing in Soup Bun (xiaolongbao in Chinese) — have also undergone a significant transformation. FG Studio’s Shanghai Soup Bun concept store exemplifies this evolution, blending the traditional charm of the cultural delicacy with a modern design.

Its concept begins with a commitment to quality ingredients, which is reflected beyond the culinary offerings and in the space itself. Common materials are utilized in unexpected ways, with red brick used throughout — on the facade, interior walls, floors, and even the ceilings. Drawing customers in from the street, the material’s warmth gradually enhances their sensory experience as they move into the dining area while providing a subtle sense of enclosure. Within, natural elements such as bamboo and straw-based paint alongside the gentle hum of cascading water and the anchoring presence of an olive tree create a meditative atmosphere.

natural materials and forms create a meditative ambiance

The location near Pujiang Township Country Park inspired the team at FG Studio to incorporate elements that connect the interior to its surrounding environment. The ceiling is adorned with bamboo mats, while the walls are painted with straw-based paint, both of which evoke the textures and colors of nature. These materials further embrace soft, natural light, accented by organic wooden tables and stools.

A poetic social space on the first floor is artfully designed to feature a spatial structure that celebrates the beauty of geometric forms. A skylight, reminiscent of a modern reinterpretation of the traditional southern courtyard, invites natural light into the space while also capturing the passage of time. Below it, an olive tree stands proudly — its symbolism of vitality and growth. Carefully arranged water features and pedestals gently encircle the trunk, forming a public gathering space that serves as the heart of the store. This area is a rest zone and a social magnet that invites guests to pause, converse, and connect. As the water gently cascades, the space takes on a tranquil, poetic quality.
