red brick and vertical gardens define 'canteria' restaurant design in ecuador

architecture practice, natura futura arquitectura, has designed the urban restaurant, ‘canteria’, in the city of babahoyo, ecuador. the project arises from a series of interventions working with young entrepreneurs in under-used or abandoned spaces across the city, and, transforming them into a new experience. the initiative seeks to reactivate the population by providing a well-designed family restaurant.

the plan of the restaurant by the architect is defined in three main areas: the double height patio space, the ground floor containing services and the upper floor which also links to a terrace to gain views over the patio and beyond.  greenery has been implemented throughout the design to incorporate aspects of nature into the urban environment. the street-facing façade uses a wall of green and as you enter into the patio, you are met with a large vertical garden that complements the adjacent red brick.

‘canteria’ has been constructed using local materials and labor, such as wood, brick and the stone which makes up the distinctive bar feature. the use of various materials adds a feeling of welcoming and invitation to the restaurant and also results in a very honest type of architecture. by using locally sourced materials, principles of sustainable design has also been incorporated in the restaurant design. this project by natura futura arquitectura optimizes an unused space and reinvigorates the area by transforming it into a restaurant for the local community.
