natrufied architecture has designed seven biobased villas in the island of texel, the netherlands, set between the dunes and the open fields. the design of the houses is based on the old typology of the ‘schapenboet’ (sheep shed), a thatched roof, oak structure used to store the food of sheep. each villa is topped with a big overhanging thatched roof, while their exteriors combine wood, natural stone and glass.all images by boris zeisser / natrufied architecture unless stated otherwise
in villas texel buytenplaats, natrufied architecture has created a contemporary interpretation of the sheep shed typology that replaces the black façade with one made of glass. this provides the villas with expansive views towards the surrounding dunes and dutch sky. on the outside, the buildings combine wood, natural stone and glass, while the big overhanging roofs are covered in locally harvested thatch.
to bring its residents in contact with nature, each villa has an outdoor kitchen, private charcoal BBQ cooker and an all fresco wooden bathtub. the next door sheep can walk up almost to the façade of the buildings to intensify the ‘texel’ experience. inside, each unit features an open living area with a central fireplace, as well as three generous bedrooms, each with an open bathroom.
natrufied has built the main structure of each villa almost completely out of wood. the central structure is, like the old ‘schapenboet’, made of oak wood, the walls and roofs are made of wood frame construction and the first floor is made of CLT. next to that, all window frames are made of iroko wood, façade cladding of cumaru, and the buildings are insulated with wood fiber. the villas are completely energy neutral, 140 solar panels provide electricity, seven heat pumps generate heat from 150 meters deep, while walls and roofs are highly insulated.
