see proposals by MVRDV, heatherwick, OMA, & west 8 for madrid's RENAZCA development

earlier this week, a team comprising diller scofidio + renfro (DS+R), gustafson porter + bowman, and b720 fermín vázquez arquitectos was selected to complete ‘RENAZCA’, a public space at the heart of madrid. the team’s proposal, which can be seen here, was chosen as part of an international competition that called for ideas to transform the AZCA area of the spanish capital into an open and connected destination for culture and recreation.

the district is currently home to global firms such as google, HSBC, and generali, while the santiago bernabéu stadium — the famous home of real madrid — is also in close proximity to the site. ‘the AZCA complex has always been an emblematic part of the city,’ reads a statement on the project’s website. ‘it has everything it needs to become madrid’s most prominent economic and cultural hub, but at present its surroundings and facilities are failing to live up to this great potential. the aim of RENAZCA is to make the complex shine, filling all its corners with life and creating a unique space for social, economic and cultural encounters.’
