earlier this year, MUJI unveiled a single-storey timber dwelling envisioned for diverse lifestyles dubbed ‘yō no ie’, or ‘plain house’. created to accommodate a wide range of generations and a variety of activities, the wooden structure, which is earthquake resistant and fully insulated, is now available for reservations at nasu kogen TOWA pure cottages as a rental villa in japan’s tochigi prefecture.

envisioned as a place to connect with nature and family, the MUJI plain house features an open-plan layout without fixed divisions or separations, maximizing the amount of potential features. in this case, the rental cabins feature two bedrooms that go from public to private thanks to sliding doors and is able to accommodate up to six people. a wooden deck, complete with a planned open-air bath, ensures continual connection with nature.

with a total floor area of 101.85 square meters (1,096 square feet), the project has been conceived as a high-performance box that is built to last. while the house is fully insulated for the winter months, during summer residents can open the sliding doors to the terrace — dissolving the boundary between internal and external space. this offers the option of dining outdoors.
