designed by mitsuharu kojima architects and located on a corner lot in a densely populated area of japan, ‘boko deko’ is a one-of-a-kind dwelling. with a neighboring house that stands closely on the east side, and a studio on the west side, the architects had to come with a solution to create freedom from disturbance. because of this, soundproof walls—which also serve as load bearing walls and storage—were built on the east and west sides, arranging the living spaces in between them. in order to ensure privacy and to create an open atmosphere, multiple floor levels were constructed allowing the introduction of light and views to the scenery outside.

the area, in general, is not predetermined by furniture

a ladder, stairs, and a slope connect each level where, thanks to horizontal, vertical, and diagonal movement, various experiences are created in an open-plan space. the floors were made of materials of which residents can feel the warmth, coolness, softness, and hardness on their skin. the clients desired a space that could match their way of life with areas that are not determined by furniture and having instead ones that can be freely chosen. ‘it is like the experience of sitting under a tree to avoid the sun on a hot day, or of looking for a sunny spot for some warmth on a cold one.’

inside the house, one’s comfort changes depending on the season and time of the day. the residents will find their own spots according to their feelings; for instance, reading in a sunny spot on a soft floor, or lying on a cool floor to experience a nice breeze. in such a way, this house cuddles its inhabitants.
