petit corridor by milligram architectural studio

tokyo-based firm milligram architectural studio has designed ‘petit corridor,’ a home and atelier for a sculptor organized around the liminal space of a wraparound hallway. a tapered volume is raised on a concrete plinth and cut by a band of glazing. the translucent ribbon articulates the angled mass of the home and expresses the perimeter-skimming interior corridor on the wooden skin of the structure. the passageway also serves as a gallery space, fitted with niches for the display of the client’s work. program is separated by the pristine, light-filled arcade; an upper level bedroom overlooks the mountainous shizuoka landscape, while the studio space is nestled partially below grade and enjoys the light spilled over from the corridor. this is an architecture constructed from spaces of movement and the choreography of light through the built form.
