the ‘podocarpus house’, designed by mifune design studio, pays homage to an old and symbolic tree on an urban property in osaka, japan. the front courtyard is arranged around a central concrete planter, serving to protect the fragile flora while emphasizing its presence. previously turning its back on the podocarpus, the renovated residence highlights its presence and engages it with human activity.

the project attempts to create a tranquil environment within the urban context

a concrete wall faces the street, containing the courtyard and creating a quiet outdoor space within the urban context. designed for an elderly couple, it is easy to access and circulate through the house. programatically, large sliding doors and shutters allow for the mediation of daylight and natural ventilation, creating a comfortable indoor environment. a back patio blends with the living room to create a blurred transition between the interior and exterior.
