sinterbecken: luxembourg’s industrial heritage repurposed

Hidden amongst the remnants of Luxembourg‘s once-thriving steel industry, locally-based Metaform Architects will take on a transformative industrial renovation project with this Sinterbecken project. More than just a renovation, the project will stand as a resurrection, breathing new life into its derelict site to celebrate the city’s heritage while embracing its future. The core of the project is a colossal 45-meter diameter cylinder, a silent, subterranean landmark that once housed a high-speed fan, its spinning blades shaping molten ore. Abandoned for decades, the site became a scar on the city and a reminder of a lost era. But for Metaform Architects, this scar represented the potential for new life.

sustainable urban planning by metaform architects

The team at Metaform Architects approached its Sinterbecken project in Luxembourg with great respect for the history of its site. The circular form of the sintering ponds will be preserved and transformed into a gardened amphitheater surrounding a central water reservoir. Native plantlife and a network of green spaces will both enhance the lush atmosphere and foster a resilient ecosystem, exemplifying the team’s commitment to environmental sustainability. An inclusive, accessible design will ensure that all visitors will be welcomed. The 200-meter loop will become a playground for children, while parents can relax on the cafe terrace alongside shops and restaurants.

preserving the past, embracing the future

The Sinterbecken project highlights Metaform Architects’ ability to weave the old and new, as sustainable urban design is infused into abandoned infrastructure. The original weathered concrete walls and beams, once cold and stoic, will be flooded in warm light and integrated with lush gardens. This commitment to preserving the site’s industrial heritage will stand as a celebration of Luxembourg’s roots and identity.
