mecanoo clads shenzhen's hengli international headquarters in bronze metal grid

mecanoo‘s proposal for the hengli international headquarters in shenzhen incorporates a commercial plinth and two volumes that contract and expand to accommodate public spaces and vegetation on different levels. the two transparent buildings are wrapped in a bronze metal grid, in reference to the hengli group’s textile tradition, and extend progressively towards each other, fusing into a 238-meter-high tower after the 5th and 6th level.

located in shenzhen bay, the scheme proposed by mecanoo focuses on developing a lively public space through a ground floor urban square, and a sunken plaza that provides access to the metro and to two underground parking levels. above the ground level plaza, the two buildings gradually rise towards each other, before merging into one at the 5th and 6th levels. celebrating the city’s outdoor lifestyle with a restaurant, shops and leisure areas with panoramic views, the 5th level combines generous outdoor space surrounded by stepped green terraces.

denser at the bottom and more compact on the lower volume, the bronze metal mesh wraps the transparent volumes, and marks the level height on the facade. the 238 m high tower houses the hengli group headquarters, comprising mainly office spaces and three stories of cultural facilities, with a shopping mall and spaces for concerts and events on the 3rd and 4th floor, and a museum on the 5th. the commercial building features retail areas, restaurants, cafes, and a generous atrium for various events.
