MC architects' milan hospital extension to feature opaque angular envelope

after winning the competition in 2015, MC architects will be constructing the new surgical and emergency center of the san raffaele hospital in milan. the project is defined by two characteristic elements: the technical slab that houses the main hospital programs including the surgical block with 20 operating rooms, intensive care, and first aid. the second, is ‘the tower’, with a 300 bed in-patient wards and outpatient clinics.

on the exterior, MC architects‘ extension will feature a transparent façade consisting of a vertical pattern of glass fins. this envelope will be a contemporary addition to the existing hospital facility and has influenced the management of the internal programs which are planned vertically and horizontally. once completed, the transparent envelope will harness natural light to illuminate the underground circulation routes that connect to the rest of the hospital.

the complex –which is about to begin construction– is planned to maximize the available  floor plan and layout. the new curved façade will adapt to the dense built-up surrounding in the area in milan. inside, the reception areas, with lounges and the meeting points will be located at the corners and the roof will feature a large garden open to the whole hospital complex.
