the new ferry terminals designed by swedish studio marge arkitekter dotting strömkajen’s waterfront are located in a prime location across from the royal palace and next to the grand hotel and national art gallery. the site is a popular point for boat traffic arriving from waxholmsbolaget and departing on sightseeing tours, bringing constant heavy flow of visitors all day long. surrounded by the city’s major concentration of historical sites, the ferry terminals are scaled down to maintain a low profile and views of the surrounding architecture. the overall angular forms of the individual structures are derived from abstracted versions of the cone that open to different locations and orientations. there is no formal front or back side to the structures, instead they stand almost as sculptures accessible from 360 degrees that form a series of coherent masses along the water’s edge. this strategy does not direct views to any one location but instead to each of the city’s points of interest.

standing out on the light grey ground pavers, the buildings are clad in a unique burnished brass alloy siding called tombak which contains a higher copper content than usual and therefore gives it a deeper dark red sheen. the regular grid of siding panels applied to the faceted nature of the structure lends to a modern yet subdued language. the interior by contrast is rendered in rough sawn oak, another raw material adding to the textural richness of the project. at the embedded openings and windows, large panes of glass reflect the surrounding environment, protected from weather by the overhanging eaves.
