‘weinblick’ is a winery project by austrian studio march gut where their design approach explores the themes of wine tasting and lingering. set in a traditional building surrounded by vineyards and rural landscape, the architects retained the front-façade but radically transformed the rear. the resulting design sees the back of the structure turned into inclining steps used for seating; this element enables people to relax and enjoy the view, while drinking wine.

an entire back wall has been turned into a timber shelving system for wine display

the stepped form of the exterior has consequently informed the steel staircase which simultaneously serves as shelving within the rustic interior. furthermore, the cellar has been designed as a intimate space with the clay walls still visible. presented with a long presentation table that is gently illuminated, the cellar offers an insight into the ground soil and deep rooted grapevines.

‘we wanted to highlight the production character of a vineyard and we focused here too on earthy materials: metal, cement, and cluster pine conjoin the new architecture with parts of the old remainders of the building. in this way, we achieved an optimum use of the only 70- square-meter small room.’ – march gut
