Manuel Cervantes Estudio integrates bioclimatic optimization

In the woodlands of Mexico, Manuel Cervantes Estudio’s Rural Nicolas Housing integrates passive construction strategies and helps families build more independently and efficiently. The wooden home sits within a mountainous landscape engulfed in greenery, taking full advantage of its context. With a focus on maximising panoramic views and natural light, and taking advantage of the region’s warm temperate climate, the project integrates bioclimatic optimization and harmonious integration with the surrounding natural environment.

Manuel Cervantes Estudio’s undertaking seeks to improve the living conditions of residents while embodying sustainability, functionality, and principles of rural living. For Rural Nicolas Housing, the Mexico City-based architects have considered optimal orientation and designed strategic openings to harness sunlight from the south, prioritizing bioclimatic optimization. The integration of insulating materials on the north side also ensures efficient temperature control, allowing occupants to comfortably inhabit both indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the year.

The program comprises three distinct blocks, with the main house featuring a social area that combines the living room, dining room and kitchen, alongside two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a storage and laundry area. To further enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, a portico to the south extends into an open platform, creating a children’s playground and a general recreation space. The integration of glazing on the south facade also infuses the interior with natural light and panoramic views of the surrounding natural environment.
