mad arkitekter to build WoHo, a residential wooden skyscraper in berlin

oslo-based architecture practice mad arkitekter has won a competition for the construction of WoHo, a residential wooden skyscraper in berlin. located in kreuzberg, on schöneberger strasse, the proposed 98-meter skyscraper will feature 29 floors, therefore becoming the tallest wooden building in germany. the jury’s decision confirms the philosophy of the project as a vertical, urban quarter with a variety of uses.

berlin’s kreuzberg is diverse and unconventional, and mad arkitekter wanted to mirror that in the competition proposal. the concept is an interpretation of a typical kreuzberg quarter, in a vertical format. it will house different type of spaces like apartment rentals, social housing, student housing and freehold homes, a kindergarten, cultural school, bakery, workshop, industry and several publicly available venues. composed of a total of 18,000 square meters, the building space will be divided as follows: 15% for social infrastructure; 25% for commercial activities; and 60% for rent.

‘we are extremely proud to announce that we won the invited competition to design the multipurpose residential tower in mass timber, in the city’s central district kreuzberg, berlin,’ mad arkitekter said on an instagram post. ‘the jury were compelled by the design that elegantly blends in with its surroundings, and the complexity of the building program, that invites the public to the upper base of the building with outdoor staircase, connecting the street life to the seventh floor. the composition of the building volume is inspired by the typical berlin courtyards that are expressed vertically throughout the 29 story residential tower in mass timber. the top floor is equally open to the public, inviting the people of berlin with a sauna and a bar.’
