mirrored M+ pavilion completes in hong kong’s west kowloon cultural district

hong kong’s west kowloon cultural district (WKCD) has announced the completion of ‘M+ pavilion’, the first permanent venue for exhibitions and events in the emerging art hub. with a complex of theaters and performance spaces, WKCD will produce and host performances and cultural displays, providing 23 hectares of public open space, including a two kilometer waterfront promenade.

the pavilion has been designed by the collaborative team of VPANG architects, tynnon chow from JET architecture, and lisa cheung. the design team was appointed to design the pavilion after achieving first prize in an international design competition in january 2014. the structure is located within the ‘art park’, offering a respite from hectic city life.

mirrored external walls both reflect the surrounding landscape and immerse the building within its setting. the pavilion’s main exhibition space is elevated, allowing it to float above the foliage. this allows artwork to be appreciated against the backdrop of the hong kong island skyline with views of victoria harbour. the gallery space features polished concrete floors and white walls.

elsewhere, hong kong’s museum for visual culture — M+ — will be one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. located adjacent to the park on the waterfront, and designed by herzog & de meuron, the museum building is scheduled to open in 2019. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
