as part of an international call by young architects competitions, LMTLS has designed a treehouse for mothe chandeniers in france. the proposal seeks to generate a new dynamic between site and experience with the introduction of treehouse modules. called ‘château-scope’, the concept offers a renewed perspective on the site’s historical castle, château de la mothe chandeniers.

LMTLS positions the modules along the circumference of the castle site to mirror the relationship between the sun and the earth. a slanted roof screen creates a temporal veil to incite curiosity while arched openings, generated by sightline analysis, allow visitors to enjoy the surrounding scenery. when viewed through the arches, mothe chandeniers is transformed, like a castle within a snow globe, recalling the magic of childhood within the viewer.

module 1 has minimal required programs whereas module 2 has an additional volume added separately. envisioned for two other sites – ebaupinay and vibrac – the modules can be strategically positioned within each unique context to create the same ‘snow globe’ effect. folding glass doors and curtains maximize the connection with nature while hammocks and swings can be installed under the slated roof screen at ground level.

depending on an interior or exterior vantage point, the building will appear with the window facing towards the castle, the traditional treehouse, and the abstract screen structure. the project aims to create a dialogue between the arched openings and radial motif of mothe chandeniers. overall, the interaction between old and new seeks to complement and enhance the historical significance of this old french château.
