ysla architects tucks idyllic weekend house in japanese forest

Home Around the Forest is a minimal weekend house in Karuizawa, Japan, that embraces nature with its various corridors. Designed by YSLA Architects as a serene getaway in the woods for a family of four living in central Tokyo, the project’s concept is rooted in Shinrin-Yoku — the mindfulness Japanese practice of ‘bath forest’. Its design seeks to immerse its inhabitants in the therapeutic benefits of nature, emerging as a fluid dwelling where the living room blends with the surrounding forest. Within, a neutral and natural material palette comprising light wood panels enhances this experience. The corridor of the house extends towards the woods, transforming it into an organic extension of the living space, inviting interaction with family members, architecture, and nature. As the boundaries between interior and exterior become blurred, inhabitants can enjoy the benefits of the outdoors and experience an open living environment.

the piercing corridor & natural interior bring the outdoors in

Having frequently visited the area and its hotels for family holidays, the clients sought their own retreat in the forest away from the bustle of the city where they could reconnect with nature. YSLA Architects realized a 70 sqm suite for the family, with the intention to maximize and enhance the quality of time that the family would spend with each other indoors as well as in the encompassing natural landscape. ‘We proposed that they slow down from city life and reconnect with nature. We wanted them to feel open and better, to live around the forest, taking in its atmosphere,’ notes the design team.

Their design ideology stems from Japanese philosophies surrounding mindfulness rooted in nature. Studies suggest that spending time in a forest setting can enhance creativity, boost immunity, and alleviate stress – a pursuit of the Latin proverb: ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’.
