interlocking plywood tiles shape le monde dans un gland

Shaped like an oversized acorn, Le Monde dans un Gland is a meditative pod resting in a forest on the outskirts of Rouen, France. The installation by LFZ Studio appears to have fallen from a nearby oak, materializing the transformative moment when an acorn begins to germinate. Its shell cracks to reveal the root of new life, creating a small opening where visitors can step inside to experience nature through the eyes of an awakening tree.

Despite its playful presence, the pod sits in dialogue with its woodland setting, gently elevated off the ground and shaped purely from interlocking layers of plywood. Narrow openings between these tiles allow sunlight to seep through and cast soft patterns across the interior’s natural textures, the diffused light evocative of the transcendental glow of Gothic architecture’s ocular rose windows.

Aligned with sustainable building practices, LFZ Studio adopts a simple yet intricate construction approach that minimizes reliance on hardware and its impact on the soil. The wooden frame of Le Monde dans un Gland is assembled without extensive nails and screws, while the weather-resistant plywood tiles that clad it stand strong against Normandy’s rain. The Vancouver-based practice further raises the structure on concealed concrete blocks, allowing it to remain protected from moisture while reducing disruption to the forest ecosystem.

Continuing this dialogue with the natural environment setting, the interior also embraces the simplicity and warmth of wood for an atmosphere of tranquility. Unadorned wood shapes the enclosure, forming the walls and the built-in bench. As visitors take a seat, they can look up to the oculus that frames views of the foliage and brings in natural light — a hollow ‘stem’ at the center of the pod that opens up and forms a connection between the earth and the sky.
