LEVEL architects has concealed a bright inner courtyard behind the blank exterior of this house in kamakura city, japan. the two-story wooden dwelling is clad in an all-white, blind front façade, while its back opens toward the green hills on the south. the courtyard, enclosed by a permeable skin of wooden slats, is the only element that stands out on the front, establishing a continuous line of sight toward the hills on the other side.

LEVEL architects has developed the two floors of ‘kamakura house’ with contrasting qualities, with the ground level being a static, serene space where the courtyard, master bedroom, and tatami room are located. at the same time, the upper floor features a dynamic, open interior which encloses the living room, dining room, and kitchen. daily life inside the house is structured around the kitchen, resembling the atmosphere of a café.back façade of LEVEL architects' kamakura house in japan

both levels benefit from wide windows that open up towards the courtyard, while floor-to-ceiling openings on the upper floor bring in views of the green hills towards the south. LEVEL architects has extended the wooden slats that wrap the courtyard on the exterior sides of the ground floor towards the upper floor as well. this way, it’s possible to filter views of passersby while allowing natural light to enter the house.entrance to LEVEL architects' kamakura house in japan tatami room on the ground level of LEVEL architects' kamakura house in japan
