a piece of parisian history is up for sale

A rare opportunity has emerged to purchase a significant Le Corbusier-designed villa in the heart of Paris, specifically in the upscale Boulogne-Billancourt neighborhood. The house and studio Maison Atelier Mietschaninoff, commissioned by avant-garde artists Oscar Mietschaninoff and Jacques Lipchitz, is now on the market for €4.95 million ($5.1 million). This iconic modernist residence, designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, has stood as a landmark in the French capital since its completion in 1925.

le corbusier’s ‘streamline moderne’

Located at 9 Allée des Pins in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, the villa stands out in its setting of traditional Mansard roofs and gables, offering a sharp contrast with its streamlined, modernist silhouette, the hallmark of a Le Corbusier project. Designed in the International Style, later known as Streamline Moderne, the villa features distinctive architectural elements, such as a cylindrical turret and a cantilevered staircase. Its bold lines and innovative use of space reflect the architect’s pioneering vision, influenced by modernist principles and the aesthetics of ocean liners.

The villa was designed with dual purposes in mind — to serve as both a private residence and a working studio for Mietschaninoff and Lipchitz. The ground floor was dedicated to the artists’ studios, with expansive glazing to allow for the movement of large sculptures in and out. Above, the private living spaces offered a comfortable environment for the artists and their families. The top floor features a spacious rooftop terrace, opening toward sweeping views and ample space for outdoor living.

Currently, the Le Corbusier-designed villa is in perfect condition, having been carefully preserved and remodeled by its present owners. The interior spans nearly 250 square meters (approximately 2,690 square feet), with the ground floor transformed into an open, double-height reception area, kitchen, and office space, all reflecting the modernist sensibilities of Le Corbusier’s design. The first floor is dedicated to bedrooms, built-in storage, and bathrooms. The upper floors include a lounge and a garden-facing terrace, while the Corbusier-designed spiral staircase leads to the expansive rooftop terrace.

In addition to the main villa, the property also includes a two-story outbuilding, which houses a modern artist’s studio and a one-bedroom living space. Together, the entire property spans 400 square meters and provides a unique blend of private living spaces and creative workspaces, offering a perfect setting for an artist or design aficionado.

As one of the few remaining examples of his residential work in Paris, it offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of architectural history. The property’s location in the prestigious Boulogne-Billancourt neighborhood, combined with its historical significance, makes it an extraordinary offering for those looking to acquire a truly exceptional piece of modernist design.
