this lifeguard tower in southern california has been documented in a new film by director jeff durkin. the dramatically cantilevered structure was commissioned as the community was particularity concerned about the beach’s safety, which is visited by many children. the lookout, which opened in 2013, provides lifeguards with unrestricted views of the beach from an elevated position.

designed by san diego-based firm roesling nakamura terada (RNT architects), in collaboration with hector perez, ‘la jolla shores lifeguard tower’ is now the subject of a new film by jeff durkin, which was submitted as part of the AIA film challenge. the success of the project has meant that another lifeguard station has been commissioned in the area.

the architects conceived the project as an outreached arm

we played with this idea of this arm that goes up in the air, and a small little building at the top of this arm,’ explains architect ralph roseling in the movie. ‘it started to take on this character of something very very light and airy — almost like it is flying. it is kind of like an angel, because it sits up there and it looks out over all the beach, essentially protecting everybody.’
