using rough, industrial materials, kooo architects has realized a new hair salon and retail space for men’s haircare brand, DENIS TOKYO. located in miyashita park – a commercial facility in tokyo‘s shibuya station area – the interior design seeks to create an open atmosphere while interacting with the public domain.

kooo architects‘ design stands against the ‘homogenous’ buildings and stores that have popped up in the area surrounding shibuya station in recent years. instead of these ‘brand-new shiny finishes’, the team wanted to recreate the atmosphere of a corner shop on the streets of shibuya. they imagined a commercial facility that emphasizes people’s relaxation and experience rather than stimulating consumer purchases and in essence, our current consumer society.

DENIS TOKYO is a grooming and lifestyle brand for men that pays as much attention to packaging details as it does to its product formula. with this in mind, kooo architects planned a hair salon as well as a display area at the front of the store to sell the hair products. by pushing the display unit into the common corridor of the shopping facility, the design strives for an open atmosphere that interacts with the public domain at the same time. the salon is located at the back of the floor plan, on a raised platform. by differentiating the height of the two functions, the designers ensure that the sight-line of the customers in either area does not cross.

when designing the product display fixtures, the team chose to use rough and ready materials that can be found on the streets: concrete blocks and steel reinforcement bars. by creating a beautiful space from these industrial materials, which are also well-suited to DENIS TOKYO’s brand concept, they aim to advocate their opinion on the current consumerism-driven cityscape.
