established in 2009, ‘progetto manifattura – green innovation factory‘ is a 50,000 square meter complex that promotes environmentally sustainable construction, renewable energy, and green technologies. designed by renowned japanese architect kengo kuma, the project involves transforming a nine-hectare italian tobacco factory into a business and research hub that includes educational suites, an auditorium and further areas of public recreation.

located in trento, the highly visible development is surrounded by mountains overlooking the site. consequently, the design team envisioned the creation of a horizontal, rather than vertical, landmark that stretches across the region’s rolling countryside. greenery is incorporated into the design through roof gardens and external terraces that enclose production spaces below. through integrating the buildings with their natural environment, the design allows the green space that had previously been occupied by the manufacturing plant to be made accessible to the public.
