kaew boutique: thailand’s creative dessert shop

Thailand-based architecture firm Mobius Studio designs a sculptural project dubbed Kaew Boutique to accommodate tourists, families, and pets alike. The work is largely defined by circular organization and its slat facade, strategically planned for optimal airflow to passively ensure comfortable and relaxed interiors. Kaew Boutique is a sub-brand of Kaew, a well-known souvenir shop established in 1990 in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Famous for its snacks, Kaew decided to rebrand in 2022 as the economy began to stagnate post-pandemic. The new Kaew Boutique concept store focuses on selling creative Thai desserts. The team’s vision was to create a landmark and welcoming space for travelers, offering products, souvenirs, food, coffee, and co-working spaces, including a pet-friendly zone.

mobius studio’s circular building backdropped by mountains

With the design of Kaew Boutique, the architects at Mobius Studio draw inspiration from the surrounding natural environment, which is characterized by rows of typical boxy residences backdropped by scenic mountain ranges which stretch into the distance. The structure includes a divided courtyard — resembling an egg yolk — fostering a common area for shared activities and interaction. Continuing the spirit of passive design, the architecture considers the directions of the sun, wind, and rain, with a roof shaped like a mountain to enhance the view. Meanwhile, materials were chosen to blend with the built context and the natural surroundings beyond. The architecture incorporates a raised mound and diverse plant types to create a friendly and approachable atmosphere.

The primary goal of Kaew Boutique was to create a relaxing space for users while coexisting with Thailand’s weather conditions. The building’s circular form and overall design approach emphasize humility and symbolic sustainability. This thoughtful design ensures that Kaew Boutique is at once a functional space and an environmentally conscious landmark in Kanchanaburi.
