the architectural language for the terminal focuses on space, light, and wide open views. inspired by the modernist glamour of the 1967 terminal, the architecture and engineering team (KAAN architecten, estudio lamela, ABT and ineco) decided on a simple yet elegant design approach. the building’s structure appears as ‘the most logical of bones’: not a single column interrupts the space. the façade columns and certain functional areas in the building bear the load of the roof.

the openness of the space allows for flexibility of programs as the building’s requirements change over time. the design submission defers to the airport’s ‘one terminal’ concept, including transfers free of check-out and check-in and automatic baggage transfers for passengers.

with an emphasis on traveller experience, the design allows ease of movement, natural daylighting and a generous sense of space. the large glass facades reveal views of the surrounding skies, airplanes, and the polder landscape.

the lighting conditions strategically create a pleasant ambience within the space. the roof is a latticework of squares topped by glass panels and supported by box girders that gradually change shape in the transition from wall to ceiling, creating openings that appear equally square. ‘the new terminal’s architectural quality is to be found in its layers of opposites’, says the design team. ‘it is a practically organized and user-friendly place yet also offers a grand, atmospheric and light-filled design’.
