when local vernacular meets contemporary design

K-Thengono Design Studio looked to environmental conditions and vernacular architecture to shape this three storey house in Tangerang, Indonesia. Topped by a trapezoidal prism roof, the form of the dwelling makes reference to a lumbung padi, which is a type of Indonesian rice barn that’s often elevated on four columns. Characterized by two levels, the traditional barn house is typically built with contrasting spatial qualities—the ground level is an open-sided pavilion while the upper floor is an enclosed private space.

Just like the lumbung padi, K-Thengono created different spatial qualities on different levels. However, the architects infused contemporary building technology and modern material selections into the design to accommodate today’s lifestyle needs.

Built on a compact lot, the ground floor level houses a two-car garage as well as storage space. Residents access the main living space on the first floor via an external staircase, which leads into an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. This level features an elevation of frameless bi-fold doors that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor environments. Surrounded by continuous terraces and plants, the social heart of the house mimics the openness of the lumbung padi. These open elements also provide natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to cool down the residence.

The upper level, connected by a central spiral staircase, accommodates the private programs such as bedrooms and private bathrooms. The roof of the prism is punctured with a circular skylight at the center, and the trapezoid’s slanted walls are punctured with window openings to supply natural light, and allow cross-and-stack ventilation throughout the private quarters.
