remote wellness space 'jungle gym' by VOID hides among costa rica's tropical nature

jungle gym: a shaded refuge in costa rica

Located in the heart of a lush tropical environment, Jungle Gym, designed by VOID architecture studio, offers a remote, contemporary space dedicated to physical and spiritual well-being. Immersed in the wild vegetation of San José, Costa Rica, this open platform serves as a shaded refuge, encouraging introspection and promoting a connection with nature. The wellness project takes shape as a simple timber structure that is hidden amongst its natural surroundings.

The design consists of two main horizontal planes, with the first hovering above the ground. This minimal ground contact reduces the building’s environmental footprint, allowing the structure to hide amidst the landscape while preserving the site’s natural beauty. The second plane of Jungle Gym provides essential shade, protecting the internal spaces from the elements while framing views of the surrounding tropical landscape. This approach creates a harmonious interaction between the built environment and the lush greenery, reinforcing the idea that nature is an integral part of the architectural experience.

At the core of the Jungle Gym project is the desire by VOID architects to foster an authentic connection with the natural world. By situating the structure within dense vegetation, the design team allows users to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility and restorative qualities of the tropical setting. Nature is not just a backdrop here. Rather, it becomes a central feature which elevates the experience for visitors. One of the defining aspects of Jungle Gym is its strategic use of natural light and ventilation. Large openings bring abundant daylight into the interior spaces, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This thoughtful design also facilitates natural airflow, minimizing the reliance on mechanical systems for climate control. The result is a comfortable, energy-efficient environment that enhances both user comfort and environmental sustainability.

The architectural approach to Jungle Gym is sensitive to its tropical context. VOID employed local materials and construction techniques, emphasizing clean lines and a minimalist design language that allows the building to recede into the dense trees. This commitment to simplicity and sustainability highlights the architects’ dedication to creating a structure that complements, rather than competes with, its surroundings.
