jinwoo lee restores abandoned oil tanks for the skyline in seoul

reforming a series of abandoned oil tanks and the surrounding site in seoul, korea ‘the skyline’ proposal by jinwoo lee seeks to revitalize the community by transforming it into one of the most iconic places in the city. a variety of different programs are inserted into the restored tanks, with spaces for the public to rest and relax as well as areas for recreation and eduction. the new activities include a library, museum, climbing center, diving pool, and amphitheater. the top of the cans have been raised in order to let light down into their interior, with the lid tops being used as platforms for observation and recreation.

a continuous circulation path begins at the lowest point of entry and leads one to the highest point on the platforms via ramps on each end that accommodate for runners, cyclists and also casual visitors. forming a large gap between the two main ramps is an exterior amphitheater and open plaza. the master plan links the existing maebong trail to the site’s proposed routes, providing multiple access points.

the sustainable design also features rainwater collection on the platforms that is transported through the cores into the basement of the tanks and stored for irrigation and domestic purposes. solar panels with built in LED panels on the back are installed in the center of the platforms, accumulating solar energy during the daytime and providing bright lights at night.
