jean nouvel imagined ‘the rooms of rome’ as a series of bespoke steel boxes, designed to align with the architecture of the historic site. existing in stark contrast to the surrounding building, these ‘openable areas’ contain kitchens, bathrooms, or cabinets. units range from studio spaces to the superior apartment, which features a fully equipped kitchen. nouvel has filled the interiors with a curated selection of sleek furniture that complements the high-end appliances.

the 24 apartments are located in ‘rhinoceros’, a new cultural hub conceived by the fondazione alda fendi – esperimenti. spread across four storeys, each apartment offers a different view of the eternal city. meanwhile, with rooftop views, the fifth and sixth floors contain a russian inspired restaurant called ‘caviar kaspia roma’. in total, the location features three panoramic terraces overlooking the historic city center.

the interiors in the hotel offer kitchen facilities, closet spaces, and bathrooms concealed by sheets of steel. the specially patented materials are fused into the ancient walls of the rooms, juxtaposed with the ragged surfaces, sandy-hued concrete and vibrantly patterned flooring. in every room there are floor-to-ceiling trompe l’oeils that act as mirrors, offering a glance into dimensions of the room that don’t exist.

the project is being overseen by kike sarasola, a spanish entrepreneur who intends to develop the concept globally. ‘the rooms of the world’ will take the most exceptional experiences to many cities across europe and the world. visit ‘the rooms of rome’ website for more details.
