bringing together MTV, nickelodeon and comedy central, british firm jacobs webber has redeveloped the viacom international media networks headquarters in london. spread across three floors, the 10,000m2 building contains office, studio, production and transmission spaces. the south portion of the site needed to be demolished – a new central atrium was created to connect the existing structure with its new insertions. in response to the surrounding pop-industrial feel of camden, the elevation was constructed using expanded aluminum mesh with colorful fins aligned in a sweeping motion, following the curving of the street. breaking this form is an outdoor courtyard, which reveals a soft green wall behind the hard exterior shell. a new entrance lobby now spills onto the street edge, continuing through the volume to an open area on the canal waterfront. sustainability was a major focus and green walls, a green roof, pv panels for on-site energy generation and a rainwater harvesting system were all incorporated.
