a design by j. mayer h. architects has been announced as the winning proposal for ‘volt berlin’, a mixed-use complex near the german capital’s alexanderplatz. the clustered concept comprises a multi-brand store, a hotel and experiential events space, encouraging the visitors to the site to adopt a ‘smart urban lifestyle’.

the building is composed of a series of unevenly stacked boxes that respond directly to their function. a horizontal voided volume encircles the structure forming an illuminated band that presents the complex’s internal activity to its surroundings. the ‘volt’ will host events such as indoor-skydiving and a surf wave, establishing the center as a vibrant and dynamic part of berlin’s urban fabric.
