‘gap of nusa’ proposal promotes flores island’s marine biota

architect ishaq rochman reveals his proposal for a floating sea center next to the flores island in nusa, indonesia. named ‘gap of nusa’, the project offers marine activities and adventures in line with the ecological footprint and circular economic model of labuan bajo — a fishing community living west of the island. overall, the design strategy seeks to promote the exoticism and uniqueness of the flores marine biota, today and in the future.

a low-impact, multileveled center design

to start, rochman (see works here) adopted a ‘low impact’ approach to avoid disturbing the existing maritime landscape and heritage. specifically, he proposed a multi-level management design to control visitors’ touristic activity and the intensity of spatial programs around the area. by doing so, future ‘gap of nusa’ staff can monitor the boundaries of what is acceptable and in line with the project’s sustainable values.

from aquariums and exhibition halls top colorful gathering spaces, the sea center proposal hopes to reconnect humans to nature by highlighting the ‘unity in diversity of indonesia’s marine biota heritage‘, states rochamn. the proposal is part of a 2021 internationa; competition to represent the indonesian archipelago.
