MUFU-ARCHLAB crafts umbrella-like structure with bamboo

Nestled at the entrance of Compass Village in Lin’an District, Hangzhou, China, the Compass Bamboo Pavilion, designed by Hu Zhenghang, lead architect at MUFU-ARCHLAB, stands as an architectural landmark that brings traditional elements into the present.

The structure of the pavilion is a symphony of geometry and natural materiality. Bamboo segments intersect to create a single sector, which is then replicated and connected in a radial formation, resulting in an umbrella-like shape. This circular composition of 60 interconnected sectors achieves equilibrium through an outward incline dictated by gravity.

Compass Bamboo Pavilion features semicircular bench

Serving as a leisure space for villagers and visitors, the pavilion by the MUFU-ARCHLAB design and research institution showcases an innovative bottom-up design approach that redefines the use of bamboo in contemporary construction. Standing five meters tall with a diameter of ten meters, the Compass Bamboo Pavilion is simultaneously a feat of engineering and a visual delight. Under its canopy, a semicircular bamboo bench—crafted with the same structural principles—offers visitors a serene spot to relax and enjoy the mountain views.
