interflow house – an interlocking system by id-ea

the front design of the ‘interflow house’ by san francisco-based practice id-ea reflects the faceted yet flowing concept of the spaces within it. a semi-detached home located on a 12 by 30 meter urban lot in jakarta, the site has a neighborhood jogging track at its back-end. this provides more light and air compared to the typical lots surrounding, where neighbors usually abut on three sides. the programmatic requirements of building make the design both complex and simple, open and closed, transparent and solid, big and small. adapting an interlocking system of the building’s functions, the home maintains a sense of flow by overlapping, pushing and pulling them in both plan and section. the environmentally friendly structure features green spaces, a reflecting pool, water wall, voids, bridge and balconies that join together the necessary rooms. constructed with conventional materials and finishes, the building has a unique spatial inter-play between its forms as vast amounts of daylight stream into the interior.
