INFORM studio + buro happold build terraced gardens into providence pedestrian bridge

serving as both a practical connector and a public space for locals, the providence pedestrian bridge has been realized by architect, INFORM studio, and structural engineer, buro happold. located in the heart of providence’s innovation district in rhode island, the new piece of infrastructure is designed to foster social interaction and community ties between residents.

the bridge connects the east and west side of providence, including five prominent neighborhoods and various institutions within the city. the recently completed structure also connects two waterfront parks located on either side of the river, effectively creating one large, seamless green space for local residents to enjoy. INFORM studio‘s design is composed of two levels, both measuring 12 ft wide, which allow bikers, runners, walkers, and strollers to use the bridge safely. an area of terraced gardens protrude from the elegant curved form, inviting passersby to stop, sit down and relax.

designed on a tight budget, the bridge adopts a simple, curved form. the structure utilizes a steel frame while the surface is clad in timber to give the bridge a beautiful, organic aesthetic. when developing the project, buro happold had to carry out impact assessments to understand if the new intervention would be affected by rising sea levels, which resulted in them raising the bridge by 1.5 ft.

constructed on the foundations of an abandoned freeway infrastructure (i-195), the new pedestrian bridge marks part of a larger redevelopment project for the harborside and downtown providence. connecting the past with the present, the bridge not only stands a vital gateway, but also as a visual symbol of renewal for the city.
