Vilna School concept rebuilds damaged site as school complex

IK Architects design a conceptual reconstruction of Vilna School, a multifunctional timber educational institution in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The project is located on the site of Gymnasium No.47, which was targeted by a rocket from the Russian occupying forces on July 4, 2022. Beyond its primary function as a safe place for local children to learn, the Vilna School is symbolic of a wider ambition by IK Architects to revitalize and modernize the educational system in Ukraine.

IK architects concept imagine a safe space for learning

Founded in 2012 by Katernya Yarova, IK Architects is a design firm based in Kharkiv, who undertake a diverse range of conceptual and realized projects, spanning private residences, commercial spaces, and offices. The Vilna School rebuild is important for the children of Ukraine, aimed at minimizing the impact of the ongoing war to their education. IK Architects has created a design that prioritizes flexibility, with the potential for future renovation and expansion, given the site’s 8,000 square meter area.

Minimizing impact of war on education for ukraine’s youth

Vilna School’s multifunctional space, include a laboratory, theater, and a gymnastics and media studio where music and art classes are held. Outside, there are sports pitches to host soccer games and a colorful playground. The external façade is constructed of timber, and the forest landscape extends to the buildings, reflecting the architect’s attitude of bringing ecological elements into the educational environment. Additionally, IK Architects imagined a public recreational element accompanying the education center with an amphitheater to host open lectures.

A blueprint to be followed across ukraine

The development proposal for Vilna School serves as a blueprint for the restoration of educational spaces throughout Ukraine, showcasing the potential to rebuild damaged or destroyed buildings. By providing a safe and inspiring learning environment for students in Kharkiv, the school aims to encourage the refurbishment of numerous similar sites throughout the country.
